NIX

Positioned strategically where the Assiniboine River meets the Red River, NIX was a captivating addition to the Warming Huts competition at the Forks in Winnipeg. During both the installation and exhibition, NIX, which is Latin for ‘snow’, served as a focal point, drawing visitors with its otherworldly monolithic stature and intrigue of inviting circular passages, guiding one towards the central sculpture at its heart.

For Anvil Tree, NIX was a fantastic opportunity to conduct further experiments in snow sculpting on a large scale, building on the years of experience already gained from working with snow and ice. Several iterations of large snow molds were conceived, fabricated and tested to produce the clean lines and curves of the original design. Once a form was constructed that could consistently and efficiently be used to build many 8’x10’ walls that were over a foot thick, the team set to work armed with snowblowers, shovels and snow chisels.
