The Dave Barber Cinematheque Box Office is the revitalization of the Winnipeg Film Group’s existing box office kiosk.  The Winnipeg Film Group was formed in 1974 by several local independent filmmakers, and over the next thirty-five years, developed an international reputation for creating daring and original films that would screen at Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Rotterdam and Clermont-Ferrand, among other prestigious international festivals, winning countless prestigious awards – alongside screening at their own Cinematheque in the heart of Winnipeg.

Located on the main level of the ArtSpace Building at 100 Arthur Street in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, Cinematheque is a cultural institution within the local arts community. As the entrance to the theatre, the box office represents the significance of independent filmmaking for the social and cultural life of Winnipeg. It is itself iconic, with its striking curve of dot-matrix panels creating a warm stream of light patterns, the inviting glow visible from the street outside. Thus, the kiosk, with its panels that are independently raised and lowered by a series of counterweights, serves a functional purpose of serving theatre patrons with accessibility and security, while also inspiring all who visit the space with its light and modern design.

Fabrication Across Digital and Analog

Anvil Tree Inc.

The project provided an opportunity for Anvil Tree to bring together analog and digital fabrication methods in order to craft a structure that fits naturally and elegantly within the space of the historic Exchange District building. Moving seamlessly between CNC plasma cutting, welding, press brake and shearing machines, while also combining traditional woodworking methods with epoxy veneer, the finished blend of metal and wood materials beautifully complements the interior of the existing space.
